Handel’s literary work consists of short stories, poetry, art criticism, essays, memoirs, novellas and a novel. It has been published by: Plume/Penguin, RE/Search, myredshoediaries.com, Down There Press, Persimmon Magazine, Clutter, CitySearch, Bark and Edible Ojai among others.
Her visual work has been exhibited in numerous galleries and museums throughout California including: Rayko Photo Center, Galeria de la Raza, Mission Cultural Center, Center for the Arts/Yerba Buena Gardens, California Crafts Museum and Gallery Luscombe in San Francisco; Turn of the Century Fine Arts in Berkeley, Falkirk Cultural Center in San Rafael, Rita Dean Gallery in San Diego, the Museum of Neon Art and Luz de Jesus Gallery in Los Angeles, the Women’s Center and Gallery 525 in Ojai. Her artwork has also been featured in the following publications: JUXTAPOZ (article by Lydia Lunch), Rocks of Ages (Hardy Marks Publications), Angry Women (RE/Search Publications) and Death’s Garden (Automatism Press).
Handel was the photo editor for Invitation to the Voyage by Charles Baudelaire (Bulfinch/Little, Brown), and You’re the Top: a Love Song by Cole Porter (Simon & Schuster). Other photo-based books include I’m Still Living: 30 Wacky Postcards from the Collection of Jane Handel and Frish Brandt (Chronicle Books). In May, 2016, she curated an installation of anonymous photographs for the Goop MRKT in San Francisco.
In 1990, Jane Handel founded SpiderWoman Press in order to collaborate with fellow artists and writers in the making of limited edition, letterpress-printed artists’ books and broadsides. Public collections of these works include the New York Public Library, Brown University, University of Indiana, University of Tulsa and Maryland Institute of Art College.
