Mary Neville
Sensory Perceptions
Paintings
June 2 - 25, 2017
Opening Reception
Friday, June 2, 5pm to 8pm
Artist Mary Neville explores abstract terrains in her fabulous large and small acrylic paintings on canvas in her solo show at Gallery 525 entitled Sensory Perceptions. Inspired by the atmospheric effects of California light and early sensory memories of wind, water and sand of the coast, her highly nuanced paintings speak to the sum total of such sensations transformed into paint. Her subtle yet articulated language of painting translates via sensitive marks and lines to large brushstrokes. Combining shapes of rich colors which stand as testimony to her experiences of nature and beyond on the West Coast.
To quote Mary Neville:
“One of my favorite childhood memories is going to the beach and lying in the sand, half asleep and immersed in the layers of sights, sounds and smells around me. These were all deliciously muddled, but clear if one focused on each component. I draw inspiration from these early sensory experiences created by the wind, sky and sea.”
In addition, Mary Neville describes the process of creating her pieces and pulling the elements together into cohesion:
“For me it’s important to achieve the right structure and form in a painting that also has moments of spontaneity. When painting, I’m always in negotiation with each piece, simultaneously walking the tightrope of “is this piece holding up to line and composition” and at the same time allowing the piece its freedom in order to embody authenticity and balance.”
Ms. Neville layers color, texture, and organic forms into a complex visual weave that brings into balance these sensory ques. There’s a paradigm of intuition, risk taking, with more deliberate strokes that permeate her work. The result is richly detailed artworks that echo nature’s imperfect beauty.
Sensory Perceptions runs from June 2nd to June 25th.. All are invited to the Opening Reception on with Artist Mary Neville on Friday, June 2nd from 5pm to 8pm.
