Mia Bortolussi
Mia found her love for photography studying with Guy Webster when she was just 14. She continued her learning and explorations at CAL Arts and went on to work professionally as a photographer and graphic designer, eventually starting her own business and clothing line, Little City Designs. Mia currently resides in Ventura, CA and teaches photography, design and studio arts at Oak Grove School.
The pieces in Love Potion No. 9 are about memory, as photography is always linked to our thoughts on the past. Photos begin as incomplete records of our best days and finest moments, moments that are gone as soon as they’re recorded. I remember my whole life in these tiny pieces of days and fragments of stories. Eventually, the photos, the fragments, become the entire story. They become the memory.
I am also interested in how text directs the meaning of images. I wanted to play with this idea of leading the meaning, but have the destination be vague. I’m telling only part of the story, asking questions more than giving answers. I love to wonder about what’s not being shown in a photo—what the artist has cropped, edited out. I chose these words hoping to make you wonder about what’s not being said.
