NACHTBADEN
(Night Swimming)
New Monotypes by Grady Gordon
April 11 - May 2, 2015
Opening Reception:
Saturday, April 11
5pm to 8pm
Oakland-based Artist Grady Gordon is coming to Ojai to exhibit his most recent mysterious, monotype prints at Gallery 525 in NACHTBADEN (Night Swimming). Originally from Santa Fe, New Mexico, Grady Gordon's art is deeply influenced by various mythologies from across the world. In each new monotype series he finds a particular myth to re-appropriate into a new version, and creates the images solely in black and white. Grady utilizes the most crude mark-making instruments to bring about the characters that inhabit the invisible plane. He works entirely by removing thick black ink from a plexiglas surface. In this process, he manipulates the ink and achieves great articulation and subtlety in his expression.
The monotype print is a study of impermanence. Unlike other forms of printmaking, the monotype offers only one copy. The original image on the plate is then given back to the ether.
Gordon is the Co-Founder of the NEOTROGLOCISM Movement ~ Sophisticated Mark-making, Crude Objectivity.
His monotypes have been exhibited in galleries in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Santa Fe and in London and Paris.
