Paul Livingstone
Born in Beirut, Lebanon, international performing artist Paul Livingstone is one of the leading sitarists in America today. He has focused his studies in the creative tradition of Indian classical raga music in which he has been rigorously trained for the past 25 years in India and the US studying under the late Amiya Dasgupta, Rajeev Taranath and the living legend Pandit Ravi Shankar. Paul has performed in around the US, Mexico, Europe & Asia and has just returned from a major concert tour performing Indian music in Nepal, India, Czech & Germany. As a committed composer Paul leads his own Arohi Ensemble and has composed for film, television, theater and dance. He also plays a variety of fretless guitars and requintos of his own design and has also developed a unique style of 'ragajazz chamber music' blending Indian ragas, jazz, counterpoint & rhythmic material from diverse world traditions. As a creative force for true 'world music synthesis', Paul maintains a clear vision for the dissemination of traditional forms and is grounded in the rich cultural milieu of Los Angeles as a dedicated teaching artist & community activist. www.tanpura.com |
Hom Nath Upadhyaya
Born in Nepal and educated in Nepal and India, Pandit Hom Nath Upadhyaya is a master teacher, performer, and scholar of the tabla, which he has played for over 40 years. His gurus include Pandit Ramji Mishra of Benares, Pandit Shambhu Mishra of Kathmandu, Nepal, and the legendary Ahmedjaan Thirakwa. He holds a B.A. in English, History, and Sanskrit from Gorakhpur University and an M.A. in Music from Prayag Sangeet Samiti in Allahabad, India. Hom Nathji has taught and performed around the world, including France; Germany; Austria; Switzerland; the former Yugoslavia; India; Pakistan; Bangladesh; and the USA, where he has taught privately and at universities in Colorado, Oregon, Washington, and California. He has served as instructor at the Royal Nepal Academy and at Tribuhvan University in Kathmandu, and holds an ongoing teaching position at the University of California, Santa Barbara. He is the recipient of the Kirateshwar Sangeetshram award, the Narayan Sangeet Pratishthan fellowship from the Royal Nepal Academy, and an Interdisciplinary Humanities Center Collaborative Projects Grant from the University of California, Santa Barbara. www.homnathtabla.com |

Join Paul Livingstone for an intimate class emphasizing traditional aural aspects of musical pedagogy in the Indian classical tradition. Enhance your musicianship and musical abilities through the understanding of the art of raga and rhythms through the practice of sargam (Indian solfeggio) and solkattu (rhythmic recitation). Discover how these skills can enrich all musical forms, including chanting and devotional kirtan singing, improvisation, song writing and composition. Students are encouraged to bring their questions relating to their own work and musical goals to the workshop for evaluation, direction and critique.
